Which Van Leeuwen's flavors are vegan and gluten free?
Updated October 2023. Van Leeuwen have changed some of their recipes and many are no longer gluten..
Ben and Jerry’s have expanded their ice cream line to include over 20 vegan options, but many of these are not gluten free. Some flavors, like Chocolate Caramel Cluster, include barley malt extract as an ingredient, even though there are no other gluten-containing ingredients. But things may be moving in a good direction for those with celiac disease, because they’ve recently added two new certified gluten free flavors to their non-dairy lineup: Bananas Foster Core and Boom Chocolatta Core!
Their regular flavors include slightly more gluten free options, but there are still a few that aren’t certified GF when it seems like it would be easy to make them gluten free. For example, Peanut Butter Fudge Core and Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch don’t include any obvious gluten-containing ingredients, but both have a warning that they may contain wheat. This is possibly due to cross-contamination and means that the flavor did not meet GFCO certification standards, so celiacs may want to steer clear until the ice cream is properly certified gluten free.
